Mangosteen offers profound benefits for obese people

People who are obese may reap metabolic benefits from consuming mangosteen, according to a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. In this study, researchers in Korea looked at the effects of mangosteen on metabolic syndrome in mice fed with a high-fat diet, as well as the underlying mechanisms related to adipogenesis.

  • Researchers at Dongguk University and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology gave mice 200 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of mangosteen extract.
  • The supplementation with mangosteen extract resulted in a lower body weight.
  • The treatment also reduced the levels of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and free fatty acid.
  • Although the mangosteen extract did not increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, it significantly decreased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
  • In addition, the mangosteen extract treatment activated the hepatic AMP-activated protein kinase and Sirtuin 1 in an in vivo system.
  • These findings indicated that mangosteen extract regulates energy metabolism and hepatic lipid homeostasis.

Based on these results, the researchers concluded that mangosteen extract has anti-obesity properties due to its effect on energy metabolism and hepatic lipid homeostasis.
